Popular #Repost 2016: Question: Are #pastel shades still trending and what hair suits them?

By All About Hair, Hair Tips & Tutorials No Comments

The answer to this question is ‘yes!’ They are still trending in fashion, with pale mints, teals, pastel peaches and pinks, purples… and dusky versions of these colours too – many designers are going for bolder colours and prints, but you can still sport your pastels defo – and they create a stark contrast with black and white block colours. So pastel clothes look great with really blonde or platinum hair or really dark hair to set off the lightness of the clothes.

If you don’t want to head out and buy a new wardrobe you can add a touch of pastels with hair accessories… or if you dare to dye – then you can go silver, blue, purple, peach – whatever you fancy – there are hair shades out there like a sweetshop ;o) BUT I would say please avoid doing the whole full-on home kit bleaching route… unless you have heaps of experience or someone with you who has… I say this because there are loads of young girls uploading and sharing youtube videos of how to bleach at home… I would advice doing it properly and safely and heading to your hairdresser for advice… because you don’t always have to bleach, hair can be stripped of colour then dyed, so think carefully before you commit. You could always get a hair app, and upload your image to see what colour would suit you!

Oh and check out this fun website – can you tell which celebs has photoshopped and which ones have really got the bottle to dye?

TOP HAIR TIP FROM VICKI LORD

By Hair Tips & Tutorials No Comments

It can be a nightmare watching your client move around after styling their undo hairstyle to perfection, whether it is a model or a bride, because you know that the hair has to remain perfect for the shoot or for the wedding ceremony… but with years of experience you learn to deal with such delicate matters, besides if you style the up-do correctly and securely in the first place it is usually fine, and doesn’t slip.

Most hairstylists, including myself secure certain styles with clips, but when sectioning the hair and using these clips indentations can form on the sleek hair, so I use tissues, clips and nets, as protective layers, and I add spray, this way the hair stays in place, but without being marked or damaged.

Vicki Lord: ExCel The Wedding Fair

By Bridal Hair, News & Press No Comments

vicki lordIt was a great weekend at The Wedding Fair… with weeks of prepping, and then setting up the stand on the Friday, I literally was raring to go to meet some wonderful brides-to-be at London ExCel… Thanks to the V-Team members for getting up so early so that we could fulfil the event organiser’s brief for the models’ hair. As the official backstage hairdressers for the bridal runway shows we had a busy couple of days…  We curled the hair with Balmain tones, attached Balmain extensions, and used Balmain dry shampoo to ensure the hairstyle complemented the theme of the show and the stunning dresses.

It was lovely to meet so many brides planning for their big day… and I’m looking forward to working with them in 2017 and 2018.

Each bride booking with the V-Team at the show received a luxury Vicki Lord black goody bag with a discounts and products from: Ogario, Orange Rabbit Cakes, Kelli Waldock Make-up, Favour Fairy, Glitzy Secrets,  County Wedding Magazines, Base Formula, the Rock Pins, Lyndsey Goddard Photography, Star Bride Films, and Pro Hair & Beauty Magazine… Thank you!

Here is a discount code for Ogario VLHAIR to be used on their website (http://www.ogariolondon.com) between January 18th and February 28th 2017. I will also be presenting on QVC this coming weekend about these products – so ensure you tune in.

Emily Rose did Anna’s make-up

I have worked with the lovely Anna Williamson on a number of occasions, and this hair do for her presenter gig looked great… but I had such a small amount of time to achieve it, and it really is amazing how a simple ponytail with a sixty edge can have red carpet appeal. The side parting and folds add to the glamour, and bringing the ponytail around to one side ensures that the camera gets a glimpse of the hairdo, which sets off Anna’s pretty face and the yellow retro mini dress, I created added thickness with a Balmain hairpiece. This is a nice hairdo for an event or perfect for bridesmaids.

You can see the look one minute into Anna Williamson’s presenting showreel on her YouTube channel:

Finger Wave on Short Bridal Hair

Finger Wave for Cropped Hair

By All About Hair, Hair Tips & Tutorials No Comments

I remember a stunning vintage Hertfordshire wedding I worked at, the bridesmaid is photographed… she was really concerned that there was nothing I could do with her very short crop hair… In fact many clients are, especially for weddings, because brides and members of the bridal party tend to want to look elegant and pretty… BUT You can still look elegant and pretty with short hair… besides I’m The Hairy Godmother, and I love a challenge…

With this bride I created a very simple, but super effective finger wave. It suited the vintage vibe of her wedding, and as you can see it looks stunning!

It is created by using what I call ‘proper’ gel – old school tub of thick gloopy stuff purchased from the local chemist – I’m sure it is also sold elsewhere too ;o)… if you use this, the style looks shiny and stays perfected in place, it also looks authentic. Pair the 1920’s style hairstyle with a glitzy accessory – try Glitzy Secrets, and the look will be complete.

Business in the first week of January

By All About Hair, Hair Tips & Tutorials No Comments

Running your own business is great, but you need to be fully aware of the busy times and the not to so busy times, and then make sure you are still proactive always. Some of my friends and fellow creatives find that January is a funny time of year for business… because there are those clients that are regulars but that have over spent at Christmas and are not booking appointments for hair and beauty during January, and there are some clients that decide that January is all about skipping the country and getting away from the cold… and so business can seem cold too, for some… but here are some of the things you can do to ensure the first week of January is a good start in your hair or beauty business whether you are fully booked or not!

  1. Ease yourself into the work and don’t have massive expectations of getting lots of bookings and then it will be bonus when you do.
  2. Contact all of your regulars and offer them last minute discounted appointments to say “thanks’ for being a loyal client.
  3. Christmas is busy for this industry so think about scheduling next year as a full on working time, followed by a holiday in January. This means that your increased intake can cover any lost income from the quite start of the year.
  4. Do a month of promotions.
  5. Use the time to assess what you need to improve in your business for the year ahead. Instead of worrying that January is a quiet month, see it as a time to reflect on the business and plan.
  6. My January has been steady, with small breathing spaces, which I am grateful of, as I know it will kick start all over again very soon and I won’t get another breather until, probably this time next year, so I’m embracing it. Good luck.

This January I am the official backstage hairdresser, with the V-Team of course for London Excel – And brides that book will get a lovely gift bag – so please come and see us.
