‘The Low Rider’ Shoot with Huf Magazine.

By All About Hair No Comments

I throughly enjoyed working on this shoot. The collection is inspired and based on Harley Davidson motorbike parts. I originally had the idea to re create motorbike parts into hair back at art college in my younger years, so it was delight to build that vision out with this shoot.

The whole collection took me months to make, with the help of my dad and his angle grinder and many trips to Halfords we nailed it!  I’m so proud of what the team and I managed to create.

Low Rider, photography by Perou for HUF Magazine Where do we stand in the future when Harley Davidson are obsolete and style is still necessity?

Wear hair higher, wider, and intricate; wear garments tighter and buckle up; there’s no need for delicate when you’re a low rider…”You come to a point in your life when you really don’t care what people think about you, you just care what you think about yourself.” Evel Knievel (1938-2007)

The Royal Wedding Megan Markle

Wow, what an amazing day, spectacular and yet intimate… and one that the entire planet had the privilege to share with them. I don’t think anyone would deny that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are clearly made for each other, such beautiful, caring people and so in love.

There’s been so much talk about the dress, mixed reviews it seems,  it wasn’t what I expected or predicted, but it was an exquisitely cut, elegant, classy, an utterly perfect royal wedding dress that Meghan wore with grace and style.  I have to confess that my favourite dress of the day was the Stella McCartney gown for the evening reception, just stunning! The newly weds looked so charismatic as they drove off in that E-Type!!

And so… into my arena… what did everyone think about the hair?  Obviously, as a bridal hair officianado, I had my own ideas pre-wedding about styles for Meghan, unfortunately I didn’t get this particular royal gig! Damn!!!

Yet again, there have been mixed reviews, some have criticised the messy bun for being a bit too relaxed as we witnessed it seemingly unravel a little throughout the day, but Serge Normant is not a favourite celebrity hairstylist for no reason, he is genuinely able to reflect the personality and mood of his superstar clients.

Let’s celebrate the fact that with this wedding, we have seen a break from tradition and formality throughout, from Harry’s beard, the exchange of wedding rings, the gospel choir, the informal bowl food, the list goes on and on… so actually, that messy updo may not have been to everyone’s taste, but it was on point for the cool, relaxed, self-confident royal that Meghan Markle has already proved herself to be.

Personally, I would love to be let loose on lovely Meghan’s locks one day, I completely admire, respect and get her.  She would look gorgeous with a messy side bun with a hint of a chic vintage wave, it’s a style that would really compliment Meghan’s heart-shaped face… I hope she gets me too and I shall wait in hope for that royal summons!!

But until then, it’s been an exciting whirlwind of a week so far at vickilordhair.com.  I am blessed and grateful for the amazing new opportunities on the horizon of my bridal hair world!  Being a part of a brides wedding day is so special and I’m looking forward to working with some very special brides of my own later this year!   Thanks for dropping by and have a right, royally fabulous week yourselves!

A Whirlwind of Vintage Waves, Bridal Braves, Fabulous Braids, Super Features and Soon To Be Revealed Secrets… Shhhh!

Hello all, I’m so excited to report that things have been crazy busy in Vicki Lord Land… but in a good way!  I’ve had some lovely, talented students at the Vicki Lord Hair Academy on my recent Vintage Wave and Braiding courses, (they are now members of my Beautiful Hair Family of course!) And enquiries are coming thick and fast for the next ‘Vicki Lord Two-Day CPD Bridal Hair Course’.    I can’t put into words how much I enjoy passing on my knowledge and experience to other aspiring hair designers and seeing the buzz they get when they see the results they achieve – that, and styling my beautiful brides… I know that I’m one fortunate lady… can’t think of a better job to have.    It’s made all the more special when the love that goes into your work is recognised by the media, so I was over the moon to see that we got the front cover, a double page spread and a special ‘Editor’s mention’ in this month’s fabulous ‘Your Kent Bride’ magazine.

I had such a great time on this shoot. It was a back to nature affair about pushing the boundaries and shaking up conventional ideas of how a bride should look.

Kerry-Ann Duffy, our fantastic photographer, really embraced the theme with the gorgeous Preston Court and beach locations.  Helen Lee did an extraordinary job of the make-up and what can I say about our stunning models Jordan Martin and Meggie Lodge… in this case I think pictures speak louder than words!

Thank you so much ‘Your Kent Wedding’ and I’m sad to hear that the lovely Editor ‘…..’ is leaving, everyone at Vicki Lord Hair wishes you happiness and in your next role, we know you’ll smash it! And we of course warmly welcome your successor.  I also have to give a big ‘shout out’ to Crystal Fairies in Birchington who supplied the beautiful dresses, Glitzy Secrets for the fantastic […]  and Balmain of course, for the glorious hair extensions.

And watch this space, I’ve been on an exciting mission this week working with one of the world’s top photographers… Perou!!!!! It’s a bit ‘Hush, hush’ right now… but I think I might explode with anticipation… can’t wait to share with you.  Thanks for reading, catch up soon xxfullsizeoutput_2b57 fullsizeoutput_2b5d fullsizeoutput_2b63

New York Bridal Runway Wedding Dress Trends For 2018

By All About Hair, Bridal Hair, Hair Tips & Tutorials, News & Press, Weddings No Comments

vicki_detling_boho_edit4LRpsdBridal trends for 2018

Bridal dress trends for this year are a little more daring! As seen on the New York run ways last month! Brides now days are becoming much more fashion forward. I’m so excited to see some of my wonderful brides sporting such elaborate dresses.

Trends to look out for include; The more skin the better!, front splits, two pieces, capes, detachable skirts, semi-opaque lining, transparent fabrics, plunging necklines, open backs and 3D floral appliqué

Hair styles this year will be all about parallel Dutch braids still very much in keeping with Game of Thrones for those romantic boho brides. Try applying braiding hoops to your braids for an edgier style!

For the demure elegant brides, keep it shiny and slick straight hair, that’s tucked behind the ears aka Kim Kardashian!

The curly shag hair is a big look this year so I’m hoping my brides will take on a more Advant Guarde Afro approach to their curly locks of hair, big, big and more big curls!

#Throwback to timeless hair Summer Strallen

#Throwback!  I loved working with the fabulous Summer Strallen a few years ago now! I created a side classic curly bun with height at the front and a subtle sweep to the side. To create more depth and curl to the bun I added Balmain hair extensions. This hairstyle is so classic yet timeless so even though this image was taken in 2013 the hairstyle is still very elegant and current. #redcarpet #balmain #besthair #vickilord

#HOW-TO DO A FULL VOLUME #BLOWDRY

By Hair Tips & Tutorials No Comments

Whatever the occasion, whatever the era and whatever your style… when it comes to a full-on, massive blow-dryed hairstyle, with super volume, it is a hair-do certain to make you look glamorous

And here is how to create the look in just ten steps…

Tools needed: Large and medium sized barrel round brush, vent brush, hairdryer, sectioning clips, back brush, full volume mousse, dry shampoo, and hairspray.

Hair length required: Medium to long

  1. Shampoo and condition hair, towel dry.
  2. Apply full volume mousse evenly through the roots to the ends of damp towel dried hair.
  3. Using a vent brush and a hairdryer on the part-dry hair until it is approx 80% dry, concentrating on the root area, wrap dry hair around the head to create as much root lift as possible.
  4. Work from the nape area taking horizontal sections of hair, wrap a section of hair around your round brush taking it up to the root area, blast with a a cold heat to set the curl.
  5. Unwind the hair with the brush in the opposite direction to create a curl.
  6. Now lift the curl back into a pin curl and pin the hair with a sectioning clip, allow to set.
  7. Repeat this process until you reach the crown area.
  8. For the crown and top of the head area, swap brushes to your large round brush, now blow dry hair once again by wrapping the hair round the brush and then clip to set.
  9. Once hair has cooled remove clips.
  10. Spray dry shampoo at the roots and back brush hair to create volume and style as desired.

TEN MISTAKES THAT #BRIDES MAKE WITH THEIR #HAIR

By All About Hair, Bridal Hair No Comments

I am not one for focusing on the negative – but this is the easiest way to warn all of you brides-to-be about some of the issues that come up when you are planning that all-important big day…

Mistake 1: Choosing accessories before you’ve chosen your hairstyle… It may not suit the hairstyle at all… so make decisions in a logical order.
Mistake 2: Another decision that is best made before you choose your hairstyle… is the dress… I am all about matching your hair to your perfect dress… the style can usually be catered to suit particular designs and necklines… but to get it right… dress choice must come first!
Mistake 3: Choosing the same style for your bridesmaids as you are having.. this is your day, you need to stand out in photos and you need to feel special, and guests need to be able to clearly distinguish between you and other guests… there are lots of complementing styles your bridesmaids can have without taking the shine from you.
Mistake 4: Getting a friend or family member to do your hair may seem like a money saving choice, but unless they have lots of experience with hair or are a qualified professional, you are best going to a salon or bridal hairdresser. The last thing you want to do is fall out with somebody close on your special day because they haven’t done your hair the way you envisioned.
Mistake 5: Even if you are amazing at doing hair. I think it is a mistake for brides to do their own… because it takes time away from you relaxing and enjoying your day, and because of the emotions and nervous energy you don’t need the pressure.
Mistake 6: It is a big no-no to think that you will not require a practise run through or a professional trial… this is the only way that you can actually see if the style will be what you want it to be…it is rare that the whole style will be done to perfection at this stage, but it gives an indication of time needed to style as well as whether it really is the right choice for you.
Mistake 7: This is something that i have seen lots, and that is brides with long hair wanting intricate updos or luscious long waves thinking that they will not require hair clip-ins on extensions… most detailed updos will require extra hair, because as soon as a stylist begins to create the hairstyle the hair gets used up quickly. I have worked on hair that brides can sit on, but some styles require more, especially braided styles.
Mistake 8: Changing the style or colour just days before the wedding without discussing it with the stylist doing your hair… this will have a massive impact on how the wedding hairstyle will look.
Mistake 9: Touching the hair too much after it has been styled, and spraying more product or tweaking here and there, will likely end up in the hair looking a mess… so KEEP YOUR HANDS off, don’t make the mistake on nervously touching the hairstyle because you could ruin it.
Mistake 10: Regret. I know some brides that regret not trying something more fun, or detailed, or sophisticated or FABULOUS! Some brides-to-be play it safe when it comes to their hairstyle, and this is absolutely fine as long as you are happy with it on the day. So make sure ta this point you are! But do explore other ideas… for example if you always have your hair in a ponytail it may be nice to wear it differently on your special day – after all it is your opportunity to shine, and feel and look amazing!

HOW DO I KEEP MY #HAIRSTYLE SECURE?

By All About Hair, Hair Tips & Tutorials No Comments

I love getting your questions – please do send them to me… head over to my contact page and email me with any hair related questions and I’ll answer them on my blog.

How to keep your hair secure! This is a common problem for those that manage to get their hair looking lovely either themselves or by a stylist and then they WORRY about how to keep it lovely for an event such as a wedding or prom or outdoor occasion…

The answer is pretty straightforward, but it depends on if you have a hair up do, or a hair down style…

With a hair up it’s all about securing the hair with good quality hair grips and decent hair spray. And doing this in a way that is not going to show all the grips, or make your hair look like cement… so practise is important!

When working with a down style or loose waves, DO NOT over load the hair with products as this will make the hair too heavy and drag the hair down; instead use a good quality mouse and a gentle spritz of hairspray and this should help the hair stay in place all day!
