‘The Low Rider’ Shoot with Huf Magazine.

By All About Hair No Comments

I throughly enjoyed working on this shoot. The collection is inspired and based on Harley Davidson motorbike parts. I originally had the idea to re create motorbike parts into hair back at art college in my younger years, so it was delight to build that vision out with this shoot.

The whole collection took me months to make, with the help of my dad and his angle grinder and many trips to Halfords we nailed it!  I’m so proud of what the team and I managed to create.

Low Rider, photography by Perou for HUF Magazine Where do we stand in the future when Harley Davidson are obsolete and style is still necessity?

Wear hair higher, wider, and intricate; wear garments tighter and buckle up; there’s no need for delicate when you’re a low rider…”You come to a point in your life when you really don’t care what people think about you, you just care what you think about yourself.” Evel Knievel (1938-2007)

A Whirlwind of Vintage Waves, Bridal Braves, Fabulous Braids, Super Features and Soon To Be Revealed Secrets… Shhhh!

Hello all, I’m so excited to report that things have been crazy busy in Vicki Lord Land… but in a good way!  I’ve had some lovely, talented students at the Vicki Lord Hair Academy on my recent Vintage Wave and Braiding courses, (they are now members of my Beautiful Hair Family of course!) And enquiries are coming thick and fast for the next ‘Vicki Lord Two-Day CPD Bridal Hair Course’.    I can’t put into words how much I enjoy passing on my knowledge and experience to other aspiring hair designers and seeing the buzz they get when they see the results they achieve – that, and styling my beautiful brides… I know that I’m one fortunate lady… can’t think of a better job to have.    It’s made all the more special when the love that goes into your work is recognised by the media, so I was over the moon to see that we got the front cover, a double page spread and a special ‘Editor’s mention’ in this month’s fabulous ‘Your Kent Bride’ magazine.

I had such a great time on this shoot. It was a back to nature affair about pushing the boundaries and shaking up conventional ideas of how a bride should look.

Kerry-Ann Duffy, our fantastic photographer, really embraced the theme with the gorgeous Preston Court and beach locations.  Helen Lee did an extraordinary job of the make-up and what can I say about our stunning models Jordan Martin and Meggie Lodge… in this case I think pictures speak louder than words!

Thank you so much ‘Your Kent Wedding’ and I’m sad to hear that the lovely Editor ‘…..’ is leaving, everyone at Vicki Lord Hair wishes you happiness and in your next role, we know you’ll smash it! And we of course warmly welcome your successor.  I also have to give a big ‘shout out’ to Crystal Fairies in Birchington who supplied the beautiful dresses, Glitzy Secrets for the fantastic […]  and Balmain of course, for the glorious hair extensions.

And watch this space, I’ve been on an exciting mission this week working with one of the world’s top photographers… Perou!!!!! It’s a bit ‘Hush, hush’ right now… but I think I might explode with anticipation… can’t wait to share with you.  Thanks for reading, catch up soon xxfullsizeoutput_2b57 fullsizeoutput_2b5d fullsizeoutput_2b63

By Bridal Hair, Weddings No Comments

Wedding hairstyle in Kent. I met this stunning bride Atina at Chilston Park bridal fair in Kent! Atina’s wedding theme was based on the Game of Thrones……! Being a avid fan of Game of Thrones I was delighted when she booked me to create wonder’s with her hair! It was an absolute dream to turn this hot lady into the Dragon Queen Khaleesi! I was given free reign of this lovely Bride to be’s hair as long as there were braids. With the help of some hair Balmain hair extensions, glitter ribbon, Batiste dry shampoo and Glizty Secret’s we came up with this braided look! I decided to create a hair style that was dressed to the side to complement Atina’s face shape and neckline of her beautiful wedding dress, I worked numerous dutch braids into her hair at the back and twisted them into a large braided Rose. Atina rocked this look and was an absolute dream to work with! Fabulous pictures were taken by http://www.lorna-elizabeth.co.uk/ and Make up by the talented www.makeupbynicola.co.uk

#Throwback!  I loved working with the fabulous Summer Strallen a few years ago now! I created a side classic curly bun with height at the front and a subtle sweep to the side. To create more depth and curl to the bun I added Balmain hair extensions. This hairstyle is so classic yet timeless so even though this image was taken in 2013 the hairstyle is still very elegant and current. #redcarpet #balmain #besthair #vickilord

Seaside #Wedding Ceremony

Even with the unpredictable weather, brides still opt to tie the knot on the beach… and when they do, they have to ensure they choose a hairstyle that is going to look great despite a breeze or a little bit of rain, or indeed the arm sunshine.

This is one of my brides and she opted for a braided boho style with fresh flowers…

Boho hairstyles work great with the great outdoors and great British weather, because they are messy, undone or purposely pulled out in places, and so a little help from the wind is fine. It is still very important to secure the hair with grips and using a good hairspray.

Batiste dry shampoo is fab for adding volume that will having staying power in the warmer weather too.

Bridal Hair Flowers Stylist Kent

#Flowers in the #Hair

As requested from my previous post here is some more info on flowers as hair accessories:

Modern brides are really loving the flower look these days… And we are talking fresh flowers… so here are the best flowers that I’ve worked with on bridal looks…
1)Orchids (my personal favourite),
2)Daisies,
3)Freesia,
4)Stephanotis
5) wax flower,
6) spray roses,
7) baby’s breath,
8) Ivy
9) Peony
10)Crysthanamum

TOP TIP: The Bride’s florist must choose flowers that are in full bloom, so the petals are fully open. Otherwise if the flower is still in a bud shape, it will look very awkward and protrude out of the hairstyle! It’s important to have the loose flowers on a wired stem to make it easier to secure into the hairstyle.

Tips for picking the right veil for your wedding day

By Bridal Hair, Hair Tips & Tutorials No Comments

Not all brides opt for a veil… but there are some brides-to-be not are adamant that they are going to choose a veil before they have even chosen a dress or their hairstyle… Some styles of hair and/or dresses just don’t suit a veil, Here are five tips for choosing the perfect veil for your perfect day:

  1. Choose a colour that is the same as your dress; for example, choosing an off white or cream veil with a brilliant white dress will make the veil look dirty.
  2. Think about the material you’d like it to be – and what level of detail will it have… Some plain dresses with streamline cuts can carry off veils with hem detail like a different colour trim, or embroidery, or thicker lace… a completely plain, thin veil may look too simple, and embellished veils from head to toe and be over the top when paired with a very detailed dress.
  3. Think about length, sometimes a short veil looks better than a long one – and can be more practical too. Amount of fabric is also important to consider, not just the length, but whether you are going to opt for a layered look, or literally a light, thin veil.
  4. Do you want the veil to be fixed to your hair in a way so it can be worn over the face, or do you wish for the veil to trial down the back? If you are opting for a lot of fabric with the veil remaining at the back, then consider a hairstyle that has height and detail at the front, there is no point in having an amazing, intricate hairstyle if it is going to be covered the whole time… so consider what is going to be seen, and what isn’t.
  5. It is key to think about accessories used in the hair to fix your veil, so veils come with these attached – but ensure you check with your wedding hairdresser.

#HOW-TO DO A FULL VOLUME #BLOWDRY

By Hair Tips & Tutorials No Comments

Whatever the occasion, whatever the era and whatever your style… when it comes to a full-on, massive blow-dryed hairstyle, with super volume, it is a hair-do certain to make you look glamorous

And here is how to create the look in just ten steps…

Tools needed: Large and medium sized barrel round brush, vent brush, hairdryer, sectioning clips, back brush, full volume mousse, dry shampoo, and hairspray.

Hair length required: Medium to long

  1. Shampoo and condition hair, towel dry.
  2. Apply full volume mousse evenly through the roots to the ends of damp towel dried hair.
  3. Using a vent brush and a hairdryer on the part-dry hair until it is approx 80% dry, concentrating on the root area, wrap dry hair around the head to create as much root lift as possible.
  4. Work from the nape area taking horizontal sections of hair, wrap a section of hair around your round brush taking it up to the root area, blast with a a cold heat to set the curl.
  5. Unwind the hair with the brush in the opposite direction to create a curl.
  6. Now lift the curl back into a pin curl and pin the hair with a sectioning clip, allow to set.
  7. Repeat this process until you reach the crown area.
  8. For the crown and top of the head area, swap brushes to your large round brush, now blow dry hair once again by wrapping the hair round the brush and then clip to set.
  9. Once hair has cooled remove clips.
  10. Spray dry shampoo at the roots and back brush hair to create volume and style as desired.
